Why UK should not muzzle free press

Ahead of the Leveson report on UK tabloid phone hacking, ex-editor Tim Luckhurst Former newspaper editor Tim Luckhurst says press regulation underpinned by statute might satisfy a short-term appetite to avenge the suffering of innocent phone-hacking victims. But no matter how benignly intended or carefully designed it would have a terrible effect on the principle of free speech.
